Department Description

The first construction degree program at North Dakota State University (NDSU) was approved in 1969 by the North Dakota Board of Higher Education with the support of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of North Dakota. Students began to be enrolled in the program in the fall semester of 1970. The Construction Management and Engineering (CM&E) Department was established at NDSU in 1978. In 1988, the Department was merged as a fully autonomous “Division” within Civil Engineering. The Civil Engineering Department was renamed as the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction. This structure remained in place until 2005, however, the construction programs were administered independently of Civil Engineering through the Division of Construction Management and Engineering. In 2005, the present Department of Construction Management and Engineering was established. Within the Department, the program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering degree is accredited since 1983 by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. It is the third oldest Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering program in the United States. The program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree is accredited since 1984 by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), http://www.acce-hq.org. The Master of Science in Construction Management program was established and approved in 2007. The course only, 100% online Master of Construction Management program was established in 2012. In 2013, the Graduate Certificate in Construction Management program, also 100% online, was added to the Department. Additionally, CM&E faculty members can supervise Ph.D. in Civil Engineering students with an emphasis on construction engineering.
